Chapter 3 – Haunting Piano

I don't know why this has never been brought to my attention before. One night I had to wake up to use the lavatory but paused before returning to my bed.

I could hear a piano.

Was this normal? It was the midnight hour! Who would practice or perform at this hour? I was not aware that Lord Edelstein had guests to entertain. Was it an intruder? What intruder would do such a noisy activity? I decided that it must have been my imagination and I went back to sleep.

The next night, I could hear the piano again. Why was this happening now?

On the third night I had to investigate to ensure that I was not going crazy. Careful not to wake my fellow maids, I sneaked through the secret passages to the kitchen. It was a chilly night and I regretted not putting on a dressing gown, but that was not my main concern. I armed myself with a frying pan. Crude, I know, but I did not know what I would be up against.

Imagine my surprise when I saw Lord Edelstein at the grand piano in the parlour! I have never seen him play and it was beautiful! I could not tear my sight from his fluent fingers. Perhaps he was shy? Unable to sleep?

I returned to bed once again, reassured that there was no need for distress. Lord Roderich is entitled to his own private time. It is not my place to intrude.

Then why did I continue returning night after night to watch him play?

I should have known that I would be caught but I could not leave him be!

Instead of being sent back to my room with a reprimand, my master invited me to join him at the piano to listen. It was the greatest honour.

Dare I say it?

I am falling in love with him.
